USPS Selects ZAP To Develop Electric Mail Truck

LBR Staff Writer Published 16 February 2010

The United States Postal Service (USPS), an independent agency of the US government responsible for providing postal service, has selected ZAP, a consumer electric vehicle provider, for an engineering contract to design and develop an electric version of its Long Life Vehicle (LLV).

Under the agreement, ZAP will convert the gasoline mail truck to run on electricity at facilities in Santa Rosa, California. On completion, the converted vehicle will undergo field trials in Washington, DC metropolitan area.

The company said that it operates a fleet of approximately 142,000 LLVs as part of civilian fleet, with 218,684 vehicles traveling around 1.25 billion miles each year. The USPS fleet consumed 444 million gallons of fuel in 2009, costing around $1.1bn.

Reportedly, the use of electric mail trucks in the postal fleet could be a multi-billion dollar market opportunity for manufacturers of electric vehicles and may have a positive impact on the environment by increasing efficiency while reducing air pollution and gasoline consumption.
