DHL Opens New $32m Melbourne Air Freight Hub

In order to increase Victoria and Tasmania’s international trade


DHL has opened its new $32m air freight facility at Melbourne airport. The new facility aims to offer the latest in technology, security and environmental credentials and to increase Victoria and Tasmania’s international trade.

Amadou Diallo, chief executive of DHL Global Forwarding South Asia Pacific, said: "We have experienced double digit growth in Australia over the past few years and the new warehouse is a substantial investment in Victoria and Tasmania’s future. Infrastructure in the South Pacific, such as this new hub, also helps support DHL’s overall growth strategy for Asia.”

The new air freight facility covers approximately 50,000 square meters of area, with two cool rooms designed to handle the southern states life science and perishables exports. Technologies such as automated temperature monitoring alarms, extensive multiple chiller chambers, freezers and temperature controlled handling and loading area, ensure the handling of customers’ products exceeds all relevant food safety standards.

Tony Boll, chief executive officer, DHL Global Forwarding, South Pacific, said: "Australia has an excellent reputation as a global supplier of high quality fresh foods, many of which originate from the southern states. Tuna and salmon to Japan is one of DHL’s largest perishable airfreight products. We have also experienced significant growth in live abalone and fruit products to Asia and other perishable products to the Middle East."
