LBR Staff Writer Published 01 June 2010

DB Schenker Rail (UK) has received a multi-year contract to transport mail by rail from Royal Mail. Under the contract, seven mail trains a day will be operated by DB Schenker, transporting mail between London, Warrington and Glasgow.

The companies said that more than one million items of mail will be carried by mail trains every day. DB Schenker will also be responsible for the maintenance of the Royal Mail's Class 325 trains, the distinctive branded rail vehicles that transport mail on the rail network.

Tony Fox, logistics director of Royal Mail, said: The Royal Mail uses a fully-integrated network of air, rail and road to carry mail. DB Schenker will perform a central role in this network - delivering mail trains from London to Scotland - and we look forward to working with them.

Alain Thauvette, chief executive of DB Schenker, said: We are delighted to be operating mail trains for the Royal Mail. Rail forms an important component of Royal Mail's distribution network and we look forward to delivering innovative, reliable and cost effective services for them.
