American Airlines has announced that it will take delivery of six additional Boeing 737-800 aircraft in 2010, bringing the total number of 737-800s to be delivered to the airline in the 2009-2010 period to 76 aircraft.
The airline has signed an amendment to its purchase agreement with Boeing pursuant to which, among other things, it has exercised its right to purchase twenty 737-800 aircraft for delivery in 2009 and 2010, as part of its previously communicated fleet plan.
In addition, American Airlines will accelerate the replacement of its MD-80 aircraft by taking delivery of the six additional 737-800s. American Airlines now has committed to take delivery of thirty-six 737s in 2009 and 40 in 2010.
Additionally, the airline still has firm commitments that were made previously for the delivery of eleven 737s in 2013. The airline also said that it has arranged backstop financing for approximately two-thirds of its 737-800 deliveries in 2009 and 2010.
